Hellbrunn and the gazebo: reachable by bus, but needs planning
The gazebo ("Sixteen Going on Seventeen") sits in Hellbrunn Palace park, about 5 km south of the city centre. You can reach it by city bus (line 25, ~20 minutes from the centre). But: the gardens are free to walk to; the palace interior and trick fountains are a separate paid ticket if you visit independently. And the gazebo itself is locked (for safety, after a visitor fell in 2010). So you can photograph it, but not climb inside. If you go independently, it’s a half-day trip. What you can’t walk: Leopoldskron, Mondsee, and the Lake District
Leopoldskron Palace (the film "home" lakeside terrace) is 4 km away and part of a private hotel. No public entry to the grounds; you see it from across the lake. Frohnburg Palace (the front of the film "home") is 3 km away and now part of the university. Exterior only, no interior. Mondsee (the wedding church, Basilica St. Michael) is 30 km east in the Lake District. The Lake District countryside (Salzkammergut) is scattered between 30–60 km away: Lake Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Fuschl. These are rural landscapes, not compact villages. A car, rental bike, or tour is necessary.
Self-guided option: rent a car or bike
If you want independence and have a driving licence, rent a car (roughly €40–€80/day) or an e-bike (€30–€50/day). Then you can visit Hellbrunn, Leopoldskron, and the nearby Lake District at your own pace. It takes planning: routes, parking, maps. Many visitors find the coach tour less hassle, since the guide narrates and you skip driving in unfamiliar roads.
Why the coach tour is designed the way it is
The film scenes are scattered across 60 km of landscape precisely because they were filmed in real locations — not in a theme park. Salzburg’s in-city spots (Mirabell, the abbey) are a lovely free walk. But the Lake District and the "home" shots are far out, and you simply cannot cover them efficiently on foot. That geography is the whole reason a coach tour exists. Book a tour, rent a car, or do the free walk and accept you’ll miss the Lake District.
