Best Time to Visit Salzburg for Sound of Music Tours

May–June: warm, fewer crowds, ideal

The city is green from spring rain. Temperatures are warm (18–22°C). Tourist season is ramping up but not yet peak. Tours run daily. Hotel prices are 20–30% lower than July–August. The city feels less exhausted. If you can visit in this window, do. Weather is changeable (a few rainy days mixed in), but the crowds are manageable. July–August: peak season, warmest, busiest

Peak tourist season. Temperatures are warmest (22–26°C). The Salzburg Festival (late July–August) brings arts crowds and premium prices. All tours run daily, multiple departures. But the city is packed, hotels are full, and streets have queues. The Original tour sells out on some days. Weather is warm and mostly dry (though June and August can be rainy). If you can only visit then, an early morning or late afternoon tour helps avoid the midday crush. The Eagle’s Nest tours run on full schedule.

September–October: still warm, quieter

Temperatures drop slightly (15–21°C) but are still pleasant. Tourist numbers fall sharply after the Festival. Tours run daily, but prices drop and you get more personal attention. A second-best window after May–June. Hotels have space, restaurants are less frantic, and the city feels more liveable. Weather is changeable; October can be wet, but September is usually stable. The Eagle’s Nest runs until late October. Late October is the last safe window for the Eagle’s Nest.

April and November: shoulder season, chilly, inconsistent

April: spring is late; weather is cool (10–15°C) and changeable. Some tours run sporadically. November: autumn turns to winter; cold (5–10°C) and often wet. Most tour operators reduce schedules. Only choose these if flights or accommodation force it, and you’re flexible on what you can book. The Eagle’s Nest does not run (closed by snow and weather).

December to March: closed or rare

Winter. Most tour operators shut down or run only on clear weekends. Salzburg is beautiful in snow but cold (−2 to 5°C). Tours are not guaranteed. The Eagle’s Nest is definitely closed (Alpine roads impassable). Skipped by most Sound of Music visitors.

The Eagle’s Nest and private tours: seasonal limits

The private Eagle’s Nest tour (priced per group, full day combining Sound of Music sites and the Kehlsteinhaus in Berchtesgaden) only runs mid-May to late October. Alpine roads close in winter; weather closures are common in shoulder months. If you want the Eagle’s Nest, plan for June–September for the best availability. May and October are possible but less reliable. Check with the operator before booking if you’re in late May or early October.

The Salzburg Festival (late July–August)

One of Europe’s major classical music festivals runs late July to late August. It packs Salzburg with concert-goers, music lovers, and tourists. Hotels fill up, prices spike 40–50%, and streets are crowded day and night. If you’re not attending Festival events, visit May–June or September–October to avoid the chaos.

Rainfall: when to expect rain

Salzburg’s wettest months are June, July, and August. But rain showers are often brief (1–2 hours) and pass quickly. September and October are drier. Bring a light waterproof jacket in summer months. May is variable but often dry. The coach tour runs rain or shine (it’s indoors except at stops), so weather won’t cancel your trip.
