Getting to the in-city spots

Mirabell Gardens: It’s in central Salzburg, 10–15 minutes’ walk from the train station. No entry fee. Open daily. Buses 3, 5, 6, 25 stop nearby if you want to avoid the walk. Getting to Hellbrunn and the gazebo

Getting to Mondsee and the wedding church

Distance: 30 km east of Salzburg, in the Lake District. Option 1 (full-day combo tour): Book the Hallstatt or salt mines combo, both of which include Mondsee as a major stop. You get transport, a guide, and free time in the town. Best option. Option 2 (rental car): Rent a car (~€40–€80/day), drive ~45 minutes east from Salzburg, park in Mondsee town, visit the Basilica St. Michael (free), walk the waterfront. Option 3 (public bus): Regional buses run from Salzburg to Mondsee, but timetables are sparse and journeys take 60–90 minutes. Doable if you have a full day and prefer not to drive.

Getting to the Lake District countryside

The Lake District (Salzkammergut — Lakes Wolfgang, Fuschl, St. Gilgen) is 30–60 km away. It’s rural, with small villages and Alpine scenery, not a single "attraction." Takes a full day and requires a map or GPS. Buses: Regional buses connect villages, but timings are infrequent and journeys are long.

Driving vs tour vs public transport

For first-time visitors, a coach tour is the most practical: the guide navigates, you avoid driving unfamiliar roads, and you cover everything in 4 hours. If you have a rental car and time, you can do a self-guided route hitting Hellbrunn (bus 25), Leopoldskron (taxi view), Frohnburg (taxi stop), and Mondsee (45-min drive). Public buses are slow and require planning, but possible for budget travellers with flexible schedules.
