What the tour is like
You meet at Mirabellplatz around 9:15 a.m. (or 2 p.m. for the afternoon slot). The coach departs centrally, so no schlepping to the suburbs first. The guide — I’ve been on tours with Kylie and Jose, both excellent — does a running commentary on the filming locations as you go: the Mirabell Gardens and the Do-Re-Mi steps, then south through the Old Town toward Nonnberg Abbey (where the real Maria was a novice). The coach passes Frohnburg Palace (the front of the "von Trapp home" in the film) and Leopoldskron across the lake (the back, and where they filmed the terrace scenes). You stop at Hellbrunn and see the gazebo from "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" — it’s standing right there in the park, but it’s kept locked (you can photograph it, not dance on it). Then out to the Lake District, the Salzkammergut, with aerial scenery of Lake Wolfgang and eventually Mondsee, the town with the basilica used for the wedding scene. Free time to wander or grab coffee. You return to Salzburg usually by 1 or 6 p.m. depending on departure. It’s a proper full experience without being exhausting.
